Good job on the watercress! It'll also double as a barrier - mine went MENTAL, it actually grew over the top of my strawberries and I was pulling it out of adjacent beds long after the main plant was pulled.

Thanks champ! I'll have to relocate it before it takes over the whole bed then by the sounds of it :P I'll have to hook into the waterfall and finish it off soon then!

I finally managed to pick up a couple of mesh houses from Big W, they cost $49 each and they cover my system perfectly! I got them to stave off the frost until I get around to building the green house. It's heaps easier to get into the beds now, no more crouching under the bird netting!

I also put up some new trellis duck barriers after taking down the blockout blind (the wind the other night partially took it down for me!). If I can find a small enough shade sail I'll put it up permanently over the waterfall, and eventually I'll put up a darker section of shade cloth just above the pond.

Wow nice. It certain looks like a great way to get a cheap shade house happening. I've thought of buying something like this just for structure and attaching my own clear liner to it to create the greenhouse. Reuse.

But the real question is, why haven't you planted frost tolerant plants? It's just that we got our first frost today, and I don't have anything covering my plants.

I was looking at doing this and thought the gazebo frames were the best, think they were about $99 on special :) These wouldn't be any good for that I don't thing, they're just to keep the ducks / bugs / frost / birds off!

I have :P Most of the species I have are cold/frost tolerant, I have a few that aren't that I will cover with plastic for the time being. The reason I have them is because I planned on having a greenhouse up by now, but ran into a few hurdles :| So opted for the $49 solution! I'm planning an expansion (extra 4 beds) so looking at quite a large green house (at quite a high price...).

lol! I would have got them from B if they had something similar :P I just noticed them in the W catalogue for $49 and thought them a perfect short term fix! :) They're 3mx3mx2m, so room enough to stand up in :)

Kenny,
I scanned your thread but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Since that day I visited your place, I've decided to copy your idea of putting the big pipe in the ground as conduit.

My question is: the small ribbed black pipe is supplying water to the grow beds isn't it?
If so, then the 'conduit' is draining to the waterfall.

if that's correct then great, my next question is are you using bell siphons or slow drains.
I'm wanting to use bell siphons, but am a little worried about the short straight drop, and actually forming a siphon.

hope you can help.
H

Hey Mate,

From memory you asked that question in another thread, that's why you couldn't find it here :P I use slow drain so my waterfall is always flowing, it takes spot on 45 minutes to drain with a 9.5mm hole. :) The rest of your assumptions are spot on, the black ribbed pipe is fed up inside the drainage pipe, so if I get any holes it just flows back down the waterfall.

nice. can you keep a tabulated running sheet of all those figures? would be a nice comparison for newbies regarding what to expect if they use your method.

No worries, anything to help fellow AP n00bs!

I'll update the table every time I do a test for the next 2 weeks, if the levels are still in flux towards the end I'll keep going for another 7 days. :)

Hi kenour,

Any chance you could send me a copy of your nice spreadsheet/graph so that I can use this for my new system data?

Love your work!

Cheers,
Hamish

There's every chance! It's pretty basic to modify, have fun.
