Thanks Ryan, looks like they have some here in Southern Oregon lakes but apparently they aren't available through any of the local fish hatcheries. I'm not certain they would be legal but if they are these could have worked for a Summer fish since they are fast growers.

You mention water quality, do you ever use fresh water muscles to assist with that. I really don't worry about it with my tilapia, but I have thought about it if I try other fish in the future.

No, not in freshwater I haven't. I am working with a few different people at the moment on multitrophic system design (kind of the buzzword for saltwater AP) growing Pompano in low salinity combined with mangroves and other local sw marsh plants, sea lettuces, micro algaes (used to rear juvenile ornamentals), and clams/muscles. Inland saltwater aquaculture isn't too far off :)

Here is a good pic of some of the lettuces we are harvesting:

I've actually begun to get calls from a few ultra upscale restutaunts in Manhatten (Ny) looking to buy (at a premium price) but I'm not there yet. Might be a completely different market for me once everything is in production.

Ahaha
I've already drawn up the sign up forms! :D

I actually had a guy tell me he would let me come out and teach at his commercial course for free if I paid for my hotel/air fare... Uh...no.

I don't have any problem with someone offering a commercial course just give me a clear definition of what commercial means and show me some numbers. I still haven't seen any of these people say "Here is my growing area, here is what I can produce, here is my costs, here are my profits". Should be pretty easy.

I got banned today for asking those sort of questions.... and replying to a post that listed the criteria for "who to trust when looking for commercial training".. and pointing out in a reply... that the criteria posted... virtually ruled out all of those that were doing it... especially the "inner sanctum"....

Or maybe they took exception to me comparing the current "commercial training" model... to an Amway model...

Let me get that straight.... you mean that the people running "commercial training courses".... are actually charging the presentors a fee for presenting at their course..... :shifty:

I cant believe you got banned?!?? what the hell (and yeah...that really happened)
I hate how divided everyone is getting in AP (not just on the internet). Partnerships formed/broken, promises formed/broken...everyone trying to be "the one".
Thats not farming, Thats not my dream. Thats not the reason I do this for a living. Its like the "Dark Side" of aquaponics.

But...as much as it bothers me ive learned to get over it. Just distance yourself from the negative and keep the positive vibes flowing. :)

Thanks Dave!

And here are some more pictures!!

What a great read Ryan and am commenting so that I can hear more about the project as it progresses. Fantastic stuff you are doing. As you are putting in your own system now, are you going to experiment, or try things that you haven't tried before?

Thanks Jimbo! It was a 4H group!

JapanAP- hello and thank you! And Yes, I am building the system using technologies I am already familiar with and have used for years (i suggest others do the same... Don't just switch things up when you build out larger)but I am also building a smaller 0 exchange saltwater system (under 10,000 gal) to experiment with on a different part of the property. Not going to be covering that in this thread though :)
