We have done our first kill. The smallest came in at 550 gm, the second at 650 gm and the third was 800 gm. Unfortunately cant tell you what they were like as we gave them to our butcher for Xmas.

Well done...
Wish I had stuck with my trout through this very mild start to summer (instead of fluffing about with Barra).
How many Trout have you got left ? Any plans for summer fish? Vegie pics?

Yes the butcher does give us some pretty good specials.

At this stage we have around 26 left in the tank. All of varying sizes but at a guess the 500gm one would come pretty close to being the smallest.

We are trying to make them last through the summer, as an experiement. If we can get them through the heat (not much of that happening yet) then we should be able to stick with the trout as a permanent species. Looking at getting new stock late feb early march if possible.

We have an extra large air pump to aide in the oxygen department, so as long as the water doesnt get too hot we should be fine. The vegies on the other hand, the greenhouse is getting warm, still havent sorted the airflow situation. Had Ruby red brussells in, but due to the heat they are shooting off to flower rather than setting into tight little buns. The lettuce is also shooting off to head. The beans have given a fantastic crop both the yellow and green varieties. The mortgage lifter tomatoes are coming along very nicely.

Congrats on the first harvest. You have a very nice looking system and the trout look excellent!

I can't believe that after the money, time, effort & stress invested in your system to date you would not be the first to try the fish  I couldn't contain myself, I'd be in there with a rod once they got over 350gm

Out of interest, what's your water temp atm and do you have any plans to manage water temps during the height of summer? From what I've read, trout will become lethargic / stop eating at temps over 20-21 and die at 25-27. Given your tank is uninsulated and your GB's inside a consistently hot GH I worry it won't be possible :(

If they've 'bolted' you may as well give them to the chooks and whack in some new seedlings asap...from 27th dec have a new moon and it is favourable to leafy growth.
It is likely they were in, 3 weeks late and mixed the solstice (longest day).
Occurs on either 21 or 22 December each year Southern hemisphere.
Now energy is concentrated on the seed bearing organ of the lettuce.
IMHO

We did get a book on moon gardening for xmas, it is amazing how it effects growth.

Does anyone remember who has a system in coober pedy. We are going up for a couple of days and thought it might be nice to drop in. Did a search and didnt really come up with anything. Darn sure I've seen photos, think they were even living in a caravan for a bit.

Hi All,

Just in answer to Scotts question on how our fish are doing.
Todays temperature rose to a warmly 41 degrees, at 7.11pm it is currently 40.8 degrees.

Our fish range in weights from a small 200gm to a reasonable 600 gms. 25 fish in all.
Unfortunately we were unable to fight the rising temp. It is certainly a sad household tonight.
