Oh well - "BIG" SP and small comets don't mix - rescued the comets today and extended my fish tank size to about 300litres, system might struggle for a day or 2 - intended using the goldies to cycle my new system when I got to that stage but they are a bit worse for wear at the moment.

New extension to the system, this is how to connect 2 tanks without cutting holes in sides, 10mm piping looped over each tank (2 pipes)

sorry, a bit unclear on how your piping loop for both tank works.
will the 10mm piping looped will auto balance out the water for both tank.
does the pipe reaches the bottom of both tank ?
is the pump in the black tank ? thanks

Easy, if its the concept i'm thinking about then the pipes are filled with water, ends are capped, they are then lowered into the water and the caps removed. They only need t be below the lowest point the water is expected to fall.

This method has been used to link multiple aquariums. As the level in one tank rises or falls the other tank is balanced out.

The catch? If you ever get air in the lines (not sure how much) then it doesn't work any more. Not so much a problem for outdoor AP, but can you imagine 2 4ft aquaria with the suction of the pump from one tank and the outlet going to the other tank if the "link" failed

Just remembered - the 10mm pipes are pre-filled then blocked off, that's what god gave us 2 thumbs for (one for each end).

Both ends are near the bottom and will allways be submerged, one 10mm pipe seemed to be insufficient so added the 2nd - as Steve said, it balances out the tank water levels with water continuously flowing in or out of the smaller tank as the GB's flood & drain

The pump is in the black tank and the outlet from the GB's go back into the black tank, this is a temporary setup to separate the 2 fish species and also an example of connecting 2 tanks without drilling holes in the side and using connectors (adding potential leak areas)

This is a before and after shot, threw in a chinese cabbage leaf and left overnight, only found a stalk in the morning - other leaf is what it looked like before being devoured (silver perch like chines cabbage)

Oh boy - did a 50% water change yesty as nitrates shot up to 160+ and have done another this morning (SP seem to be contented now)

Disconnected the connecting pipes to the goldfish tank and have made that a standalone tank, now only using 20 SP to feed the GB's, see if that will balance the system better.

Now have time to relax and work out what happened:

Day of adding SP to system NO3 ~ 0/5 (veggies stressing out)

Week 1 NO3 up to 40+, veggies starting to recover - Les very happy but mental note to monitor NO3 in a week

Days leading up to end of week2 - air temp rose from 25C - 37/40C, water temp from 23/25 to 28/29C.

Veggies new growth as per initial startup (phenominal), SP on ich watch alert, Les' heart rate back to normal - will let system settle and take a NO3 reading this arvo (plus PH)

Might change my signature to " damn this AP is fun"

Noticed abnormal behaviour in SP (flashing), checked NO3 @ 160+ and went into HSM (but calm now)

I am not sure how much of this stress your poor ole ticker can handle mate! I prescribe a lot of rest and elbow excerices for today, see if you can't get the blood alcohol up to an acceptable level before you go stressing yourself out with more tests

Alright, there is an excellent mind and body exercise and diet regime here. I feel, as a user of this health method, that all of you should give it a try. It's a very sensible way to live
