Hi Steve, butting in again, that shiny new system needs a lot more observation and maintance.
you can have the best system in the world and you will still lose some live stock for no reason
but i can see the reason why you lost those trout, new systems need TLC twice a day for a month to see the fine adjustments required to stop a disaster.
I am feeling for you.
Jim.

Sorry for your fish problems  Hopefully we can all learn from your experience and save some future troubles.

The temperature at our place reached 29c two days in a row my insulated tank reached 18c on the second day so it rose form 14c to 18c in 48 hrs. I notice the trout were off their food yesterday but back on with a vengeance today.

I still have to insulate the pipes - especially the black pump line that is in full sun, hopefully
I can hold the temperature better into the warmer weather.

Steve how was your ammonia levels at the time? How are you supplying oxygen? I have been using a 3000L wave pump plus I run 1800L p/h circulation to GB's and sump (tank and sump are 1500L combined). I have just bought a 1800 L/h air pump which I am going to put on a thermostat to start when the temp gets up higher, maybe at 22-23c.

Do you think it was just low o2 or might it also be the rapid change of temperature?

no extra O2, and jim's right on the maintenance, tank level had dropped to about 1/2 volume. it should also have had a cover in anticipation of the hot full sun days ahead. got complacent with knowing how my old system worked.

no ones fault but my own and could have been avoided

:eat: three of the trout tonight, one circa 300gm and two 200g (between reets and i)

They came out with a mild pink flesh and were easy to eat, peeling the frame off after eating the first "side"

cooked them in a ceramic casserole dish in the oven at 160C, stuffed the inside with fresh chopped parsley, drizzled melted butter with crushed garlic over the parsley, topped with slices of tomato and garlic paste and sprinkled with mixed Italian herbs.

fracking fantastic.

Hope the frozen ones taste just as good, i could have eaten another one easy :)

Glad to hear you enjoyed your trout Steve and Reets. At this time I hope more people start eating them instead of just waiting until it is too late.

At least you get to eat them. I mentioned that the fish are for eating and I didn't get a positive reply. And I'm still getting 200 fingerling's in Nov to add to the 43ish I have already. How long do silvers live for if they are well feed and never eaten.

Food and Fish has even attempted bribery with a 1000L plastic tank to use as a sump if i convert over to chift-pist.................

i went out and looked at the system heights today. I dont want to lower the GB's at all as they are a perfect hight for me. The tank is a perfect hight to rest on while looking in, but i suppose it wouldn't kill me to raise it a bit. problem is that i need atleast 30cm drop from the 90mm outlet to my beds to make it work well i think.

am thinking of purchasing 25 murray cod for the system............thoughts?

25 murray cod won't raise the height of the tank any Steve. They'll just make it all smelly outside
