Whilst tidying up and harvesting today I decided it was time to remove the passionfruit vine. I cut back piece by piece and before I knew it I had a xmas wreath. Better still with lacewing eggs :)

Great idea Faye, I wish I had your inventive mind.

Martin, lacewings are a great 'good bug' to fight back against affids.

Hi Charlie, I've been reading up about them. Great insects to have around. Since becoming interested in AP I have learned a lot about beneficial insects, something I never knew about before. I have also made an effort to not kill everything in the home and to eject them instead. I threw out a spider as big as my hand the other day. Captured it with some tupperware and went and released it into the bushes down the road. This is from an arachnophobe.

Did kill something last night though - imagine a hairy ant as long as your small finger with pincers but (I think) only four legs that moves really fast and looks like Satan just arrived on earth. I am trying to find out what it is so I know if it is dangerous or not if I encounter it again. Can't leave dangerous insects in the house with small children. But I think next time I will throw it out too if possible.

Faye an inventive mind is a thing of beauty although it can drive you around the bend. Just enjoy. :)

Martin the first thing I reach for before the tupperware when I spy a bug is my camera with macro lens :) Though I wont need the macro when I go to Borneo next year coz their bugs are big. :)

I have seen your striking photos Faye.

We've been looking at getting a nice new camera. The old one is point and click and wouldn't be useful for insects. Hopefully we can make that happen in the next few months then I can entertain you with the gripping insect life of Johannesburg, South Africa. :)

Thanks Don, I was hoping that would be the case about the bones.

Martin C-- If you were in the South West U.S. I would say you found a Vinagaroon. They're like a cross between a termite and a scorpion. I have heard folks say they can bite, but I'm not convinced. Humans are too big for them to get their jaws around- We trapped one when I was working construction, and their jaws are four lobed, shaped like lobster claws, and they essentially masticate their prey, then suck it dry, like spiders. Another name is a 'sun spider'.

In Iraq, they come BIG! and get named 'camel spiders'... the one's around here, they are about the size of a pingpong ball... these bad boys... I'd run. They're 'sound sensitive' and if you yell, they come strait at ya'.

Actually if you put a small fish in whole it will dissolve all the bones .Don't know about a big one maybe if you waited long enough that would too but never tried it.

Hey herbsinger42, thanks for that all stomach turning, detail. Much appreciated. :)

I think it was a mole cricket but I am not sure. I will no doubt get another one in the house and then capture it and do a better job of identifying it.

Regards, Martin.

Well I had one of the roll mops tonight and pleased to report it was better than the one I had at a lunch at a Miss Mauds restaurant the other day - not that there was anything wrong with that.
No bones evident and it was tasty, so there you go another recipe for trout fillets.
The capers are ready too - I mean the pickled nasturtium seeds - which were a tasty addition to my home made ricotta cheese on a cracker biscuit.
