You're right there are no juveniles. And they are quite squarish and fly really well, I just wasn't sure what else they could be.

Might be just a hatch of some aquatic insect that was looking for a convenient landing spot :dontknow:

Nah definitely sap sucking. Although if I lower the water level might reduce the risk.

I know you said you have tried the hose them down thing, but if you have access to a pressure washer, maybe give that a go? atleast that gives off fine droplets that spread well.

My horticulturist wife reckons they aren't thrips either. Needs a clearer pic to tell exactly what they are.

I did some looking around and came up empty. What they remind me of is fungus gnats or shore flies but these aren't sap suckers. With these guys it's the larvae in the soil that cause the damage to the plants. If whatever these are, hatch from your growbeds, you could try adding Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis which can be found in Gnatrol and other products.

A closer look at my bugs and a new kid on the block. The 2nd pic shows bugs that are hanging around in a neighbouring tree but don't seem to me en mass in the AP. There is more lady beetle activity but not sure if its doe to winged insects as I would have thought they have the perfect escape route.

Tomato seedlings doing ok but not all. I will add some more seasol but I think its time to say by bye to my trout as they are clearly not happy and the nights are getting warmer. .

The new bugs look like winged ants to me.

I'm sort of expecting a plague of locust next

Thanks Scotty I wonder if anyone will be able to identify those?

Does anyone know what the winged insects are in the 2nd pic?

Had a fun day today... Set up a production line. Hubby caught fish, I killed and gutted, my mother rubbed with salt, larger kids tried unsuccessfully to catch but had fun on the trampoline, toddler shooed flies away (a job she took very seriously). We learnt by trial and error how to use our smoker. And sat down to a trout brunch with a glass of white and veg + herbs from the AP of course. This is the life! We caught 12 so have approx 65 ish to go. Largest weighed in at 500g, the rest were around the 300-350 mark but there are some tiddlers still in the FT, maybe the larger ones are slower and got taken?

We are about to get that Perth hot weather but I am waiting on my eBay purchased vacuum sealer bags to arrive before we do anymore. I am also hunting down a recipe to cure before I smoke to add a little flavour. These were nice but needed some garlic aoli, I'd like them to be a little more flavoursome before I do the rest. It really is a lovely feeling to be able to grow and prepare good food for the family.

Great harvest Colours, good to see all the fam get involved too.

I brine mine overnight before smoking and I think that gives it that little extra you may be looking for. Just a simple brine of water and brown sugar and then anything else as an addition to taste like chives, chilli, soy, corriander, parsley etc.
