Hey BF are you going to transplant the lmon tree to AP or just gonna leave it dirt?

hmmm. i never really considered this as i had just planned on digging up and replanting in a large pot. not sure how i would go about putting it in an aquaponics system without killing it first. i wouldn't want to much dirt floating around in there. perhaps i could remove the dirt gradually so i don't stress the plant so much. then once most is gone put it into gravel. i think its a worth while experiment. thanks for the ideas folks.

I would dig out as big as a root ball as i can in put it in a large cotainer with some airation and let the bubbles safely remove most of the dirt for you

I have successfully transplanted citrus trees from poor weed ridden soil to potting mix before.

On a cool morning/afternoon remove tree with maximum amount of roots, in shade wash soil off with a hose until roots are bear plant (this method works well when the plant grows in poor soil, better soil to begin with the plant suffers- plant thinks "hay what are you doing? :?: :x  " then you put it in a better soil and is says "wow this is awsome thanks buddy :D  8) "). NOTE: haven't actually heard them though.:)

Can see why you couldn't try this transplant method but into the grow medium rather than potting mix.

Worth a shot! the only issue is you will need to have its final home ready and cycling before this takes place (bit difficult due to trees location!).

stage 2:

i picked up a 2nd hand pagola from the quokka and layed the posts out to get an idea of how it was going to fit the space. to my surprize the pagola was not as large as i was told. seems like the seller bodged the measurements. funny enough it worked in my favour as the size fit perfectly into the space. im looking at roughly a 5x5 metre structure.

stage 3:

now it was time to put in some posts to get the frame up. after a heap of improvising the structure and a bit of luck, things are starting to come together. once i put in 3 more posts at the far end and some cross-beams, the frame will be complete. then it will just be a matter of securing beams on top and then clear sheets on them. the slope will all be towards the back of the pic and a gutter put in place to collect runoff.

thanks for the comments guys.

thankfully the old man (seen in pic) is on holidays. wouldn't ya know he's a school teacher also (highschool mathematics). i'm gonna convince him to turn this project into an assignment for some of his students. he will give them the materials and dimensions and get them to design their own systems. this really would make maths in practice practible.

To hijack your thread...
It could be more than just maths - an integrated programme could be put in place - this is when a number of subjects are combined around a common topic/idea... If he could rope in some more subject areas they could have a integrated programme approach!
