Lord knows there's some truth in that... check my thread if you want to see disaster... be wary of overfeeding, and not giving well enough defined instructions to ppl looking after fish whilst you're away.

veggie girl, every one is covering it well, but i just did the same thing tonight.

fish were good for two hours, but i took 3 hrs. 20 fish were dead and the others gasping a near death. i just threw them in as any more delay would have killed them. will report back to you in the morning on how they are.

keep an eye on the ammonia and control it via water changes.

feed nothing if you have ANY ammonia

test for nitrites and if you cant then add salt to detoxify it (1kg will be plenty)

If your system is new and has not cycled then DO NOT get any more trout until it has. (and then PM me so you can pick some up for me too :))

Bugger
I wonder what the bag water temp was before release??
Keep the air on 24/7 it costs bugger all to run and is our biggest issue
That was IMHO only.

Sounds like they settled in ok if they were happy after being in their new home for 4 hours. Im thinking that it was the azolla or whatever else was in the bag with it that was the problem. Trout are carnivores by the way so weed isnt generally part of their diet.

my feeling is that they were very weakened from the long transit/low DO, and any number of issues (ammonia, ph shift, temp, or even something dodgy from the azolla bag) may have been the straw that broke them.

I KNOW how hard it is NOT to buy fish, even when you know you shoudnt, but trust me, run your system with whats left until it is cycled, then go buy more, macclesfield will have them for months and months. each month and year after you initial cycling will give your system more and more stability and resilience.

keep us up to date.

Steve

That's what I was wondering...As I know zilch about fish, I wasn't sure what the time frame would be, but had thought that 4 hrs meant that they were OK...
And/or, the too long transit and the bad transition..

Is 3 fish enough to cycle with if that's all I have left (1700L water)
Otherwise will add goldfish and get some fish experience..and not add anything weird!

No trout left now (last 7 died over night) so will go with goldies to get the whole thing going, and also to see if there is some strange thing in the tank. If goldfish don't survive, then there is something odd.
Will only put trout in again when things seem stable, just to be sure.
