Just wanted to show pics of our strawberries today so you don't get the wrong idea and think you cant' grow them in an aquaponic system.

Hi Clint

Other may disagree but I have found with strawberries that it is important to keep the crowns well above the water line. I have also found that they do better in beds that have dry periods.

I think most will agree that they do not like salt levels above 3ppt.

Yep salt at 3ppt prolly not good..
Though my system is in flood 24/7.
Strawbs have sent off runners in all directions and now they are producing strawbs,
none, any higher set than the main crown. Except the ones growing out of the beds.
But it may just be a quirk of nature that my and faye's do well :?

I think C1's strawberry example is one of the frustrating things about AP, you see a real success and have trouble replicating it :? . What works for one doesn't always work for another, I couldn't get the damned things to grow. After about 10 dead plants and lots of cursing I read some info in this forum and put some in a timed system that has long periods of no water, success at last. I most cases you will find the answer with some trial and error.

my system is continuous flow. no dry periods.
First season I got some growth, but no real strawbs.
Dissatisfied, I removed all plants without fruit or flowers set. More fool me, 2 months later I had a bunch or two. Hoping for more next year. I've still got flowers setting atm :-) yumm. The fruit rarely make it from picking to front door though, they're too yummy.
Plenty of runners are thrown, I don't know what variety they are, as I got them from a work colleague/acquaintance now turned bitter business rival :-( Silly fool that he is.

But wait theres more. :)
I think one of the success of strawberries is to only take the first two plants of the runners away from the main plant as these are the strongest. (Throw the rest away, is what I heard?) If they were given by a friend it may be for some that the original stock was inferior. The main plant should also be replaced. Not being a strawberry specialist there could be other contributing factors such as variety. Eg some are produced for their large fruit, others for their sweet flavour, pink flowers or the fact they will produce all year round. Raises more questions than answers sometimes, or as C1 would say when they were planted hehehe
