so would it be worth paying the extra money and getting the good polymaster aquaculture tank?
as opposed to something much cheaper?

the one im looking at has a seperate base with a sloping bottom and piping in the centre which i assume would allow fish poo and uneaten food to swirl around into the centre hole to be pumped away much more efficiently ??

Go the best tank you can afford, and feel comfortable with.

Sloping bottom has advantages if you intend to drain from the bottom... i.e using an inline pump...

Doesn't really do anything if you're planning chift pist... other than maybe make it more difficult, less effective... :dontknow:

Constant Height In FishTank, Pump In Sump Tank....

Single pump in the sump... fills fish tank, which overflows a standpipe.... usually has cut out crennelations in the bottom to help suck the solids up and into the overflow...

oh yes that could be the way to go il have to have a think how id work that then..

il go check out that link too

could an IBC container be used as a sump tank or would it be better off as a smaller trough sort of thing

the size of my system will be around the 1 to 2000L fish tank and starting with 4 blue drums, not cut in half but using each drum as a single growbed

and if i could use my big ibc container as the sump tank that could help cheapen things up a bit considering i already have it and that i still need to buy a fair bit of other stuff mainly a tank and some piping, an old friend has offered to give me some of his piping and fittings though which might help me out a bit

thanks for your help so far tho everyone its a big help

in most cases, you only need a sump tank if the volume of the sum of all of the growbeds are more than equal the volume of the fish tank. but if you're doing chift pist like what joel did, then you might as well use it anyway, this way you can have more GB's

I'd use the IBC as sump.

Have a look at FishFodders system Maverick.... it's Chift Pist... using two IBCs... one as the fish tank... the other (dug in) as the sump...

Sure he uses the BYAP growbeds... but just ignore them, substitute your blue barrels...

And you have the system that you're talking about.......

Couple of IBCs might cost you $500 (max)... cheaper than the tank you were thinking about...

My CHIFT PIST, from a few months ago.

Pump in bathtub, pumps to IBC, overflows from IBC into Barrels, into bathtub.

P.S ... $1400 would get you a BYAP 3000L tank and a 1000L sump tank ...
