the easiest way is not to wash it :P

I used a wheelbarrow full of water, shovel in gravel, shovel out gravel :)

Don't sterilize, just rinse any sand/clay/grit off the gravel.

btw, I grew up in Kinston, just down the road from you.

we used water plant baskets to shake the gravel in some water before dumping into the grow beds. Tedious but good for reducing silt buildup in the system. So long as the containers of water are up at a good height for working it isn't too hard on the back. Wheel barrow height would likely be too low and cause much pain if you need to use hands instead of a shovel.
