Here's another question. My tank is in front of a south facing window so I can use sunlight for the plants. Could the UV from th sun have killed my bacteria colony?
Still in front of the window, but have a dark cloth covering the back blocking most light

Meenwiz,

I don't think I've seen anyone mention this happening. Think how many ponds are
outside in sunlight everyday yet are bacteria ecosystems to the nth degree! UV light
is broadly broken down into 3 types: UV-A (320-400 nm), UV-B (280-320 nm), and
UV-C (200-280 nm). UV light damages the DNA of living organisms and each band
causes different distinct mutations. I'm sure there are lots of variations on this, but
I think most UV light sanitizer germicidal bacteria killer pretty much uses UV-C for
its effectiveness. Thankfully for life as we know it, UV-C from the Sun is pretty much
completely filtered out by the Earth's atmosphere. Any reaching the planet surface
would be a non-issue for all but the most sensitive of organisms.

Particularly at wavelengths around 250 nm–260 nm,[7] UV breaks molecular bonds within
microorganismal DNA, producing thymine dimers that can kill or disable the organisms.

I think you should look elsewhere for your culprit.

+1

UV light is not the problem.
