Its been documented that RFF's are better bang for your buck for solids removal.

So I've started cutting up IBCs and laying out the system. The x2 cages in the corner will be the fish tanks (x1 sp tank & x1 seasonal tank barra/trout) just need to get a hold of x1 more ibc for a 4th growbed/ sump tank.

I'd like to convert this dwarf lime tree and its pot to a cf gb and add to the system, thoughts on its chances of survival/ likelihood to thrive?

I was originally going to use a 200l barrel as a swirl filter, I need to research it a little more though as a lot of people aren't running them and just allowing worms to break it all down in the grow beds.

You only NEED a filter if you are really pushing your stocking densities. Pretty much every reason to have a filter at a normal density can be taken care of with clever design. DrLuke i think it was had some very clear water and didnt have a filter. The bottom of his IBC was spotless. Most people have a filter because the WANT a filter. :)

With regards to the oil IBC's, mine was an engine oil IBC. I used biodegradable degreaser a few times and then a go with bleach then left it in the sun for a few days. No ill effects yet :)

Thanks mate, no plans at this stage for a filter, can always add one at a later date if it becomes a need

FINALLY got my system running tonight :) when the minister for finance found out him much all the plumbing, hardware and expanded clay where going to cost she was not impressed to say the least! So my angle to bring her round was suggest that I spend half, and only set up half, finance approved! My theory Is once it starts producing she'll be happy to spend a little more and bring the rest of the system online.

Will post some pics tomorrow, just had to share my excitement :)

Congratulations on the birth of your new system.
How about going with a mix of pea gravel and clay, more media for the buck.
If you are only going to get half the system running you may as well set the other half up as a separate system...
Oh yeah, twice the expansion.
