Hi guys. Finally got my test kit and do have my first lot of readings...

Ph 7.6
Nh3 0.2
No2 0.0
No3 0.0

I've changed 90% of my water to get rid of the scoria dust.

I've still got 4 goldfish swimming happily.

I've also added the contents of a friends goldfish pond filter.

Should I be doing anything else at this stage?

Test results from yesterday

Ph 7.6
Ammonia - 0.25
Nitrites - 0.0
Nitrates - 0.0

Do I need to do anything else other than sit patiently?

Latest water readings are in. The ammonia has climbed slightly to 0.25, but my pH is now sitting around 7.8. That seems to be a bit high. The water has also gone a darker color. Its not the scoria, but more a black.

Anyway suggestions?

Readings today are still the same as last time.

Should the ammonia be going up quicker?

My plants are looking ok, but the growth in the dirt is better. Should I be getting more?

BF,

Your system is new. Its winter, its cold, it will take time to cycle. Even then it takes time to mature. Just chill out and let things happen. You can't force it to happen.

Yep, dirt growth is better at the start, but you have to keep picking out the weeds, and fish can't swim on dry land.

Hang in there, it will happen.

You can use a pillow case or scotch/brillo pads under your GB water supply and it will clear after a while. Another option is to use some egg whites, it binds the fines and clears the water. If you havent, Id remove the auto syphon and pump constantly. It wont take long to clear.

Egg whites.. i didn't know that.. does it create any problems with cycling..like ammonia spike suddenly? :wave1:

I was getting too much water in the GB, the standpipe could keep up, so I put a flow regulator in this morning. Working much better.

Here are the latest readings.

Do I need to do anything to bring the pH down?

Latest readings here. pH continues to climb, and no Ammonia spike yet. Could it be possible my 4 goldfish are not producing enough waste?

Yea, you will def need more fish. Winter temps wont be helping and Id imagine you wouldnt be feeding much either. Have you got any options in your area for fish supplyers

Yes, I probably need to go to Ballarat and get some trout. Just a matter of making the time.

Does anyone know if they sell feed as well?

I finally got some trout added (thanks Ballarat Trout Hatchery - what a top place)

Is there anything I should do to my water now they are in?

I have never added salt, should I do this now?

Below are my latest readings..
