Just some cheap bird netting would do the job Steve. They sell the black stuff in a pack of a reasonable amount for just a couple of bucks at B up here.

Make sure the bird netting is held tight over the tank other wise the fish might get tangled up in it. That blue fish cage type material seems to be very good. I just can't find any.

And yes... the trout are awesome to feed. I can't wait for next year with a big tank and about 100 of them all jumping up at the food.

Checked dad ammonia last night, it was about 1.5ppm nitrite 0.0 ppm PH 7.6

All to be expected as its a new system. Dad not interested in the finer points of the nitrogen cycle ;)

Popped out today to get some of that bacteria in a bottle in between jobs today and put 150ml in his system. He's not interested in doing a water change. AAARRRGGG.

Will do a filter lean on my indoor cod tank tonight and bring him two lites of yucky filter mud.

Stay tuned

Trout man, was it you that helped me out at christmas time when my perch had that fungus?

One of dads trout seems to have the start of it, was n about a 1/4 of him this morning, and tonight it seems to have progressed to 1/2.

Steve, yeah that was when your Perch got Saprolegnia or as you so aptly described it "beer batter disease"!
If its only present on the one fish I would definately get it away from the others and either cull it or put it in tub by itself and treat with salt. Saprolegnia is killed by salt at concentarations of 15ppt or greater and remember that trout can handle sea water so the salty water shouldnt harm the fish.

F&F, here is the website for the fish farm, only about an hour from my place if you use citylink.

www.fishfarm.com.au

Troutman, yes thats the one, sap.... its speed of growth is scary. have called dad up just now and instructed to remove the fish (and possibly another) into a 20L bucket with 20 ppt salt. how long do you suggest we keep them in the salt for? Only becasue if its an entended period i'll ahve to put an air stone in there............Thanx for your help, i appreciate it.

Steve

Steve, ideally it would be best to keep the fish in the salty water until you notice the fungus disappearing which can take days or even weeks depending on water temps and how badly the fish is infected. So you will definately need an airstone in with the fish in its separate tank.
Sap usually develops when the fish get stressed as a result of a sudden drop in water temp but as this case is restricted to just one fish it may be because that fish was already in a weak state and therefore more susceptible to disease.

Thanks for that, troutman.

Its hard'cause the system is at dads place and i don't think he comprehends how fragile a new system with 550lt water and 20 100gram fish are ;)

had them in a bucket of 20ppt salt for about 3 hours, then put them back in the main system. I culled the worst affected one.

If it was my system i'd dose the entire pond to 20 ppt, but as mum and dad are getting ecited about root growth on the silverbeet and spinach this might do more harm than good to the AP conversion ;)

Will monitor it closely.

Steve

Oh yeh, also cleaned my filter and brought down 3 litres of filter water/sludge for dads system. Will check ammonia tonight to see if there is much of a dif.

hehehehe, i told dad yesterday "feed them a little in the morning just so you can admire them, then thats it, no more"

"did you feed them in the morning?"

"yes, and after work too"

"i said not to"

"i didn't......it was only half a handfull..........not much"

LOL!
