At the end of my first day I've managed to cut two GBs (will each hold about 350 litres) and two STs (will each hold about 450 litres).

Oh, and my pump has just been delivered. I'll include a picture later.

Cheers, and thanks for looking.

Thanks Rupert.

I've been thinking about the early stages of getting things started, after I finish the plumbing. :D

Do you think it's ok to use Charlie Carp to begin with?

I'm happy enough to take things slowly (I think) so would prefer to not sacrifice any goldfish or whatever. I hope eventually to try some trout. What time of the year should I be looking for fingerlings (being in southern Victoria).

Cheers,

Charlie Carp will provide an ammonia source to start the cycling process... and some nutes for the plants...

Thanks, I was pretty sure I had read that here somewhere! I suffer information overload when I spend time on the forum, it's just so extensive. I plan to log on for just a minute to check something and before I know it it's late, again.

Anyway, I've probably still got a few weeks to wait until I'm ready for planting etc.

Thanks again.

The best thing about Charlie Carp is in the naming...

Finished cutting another two IBCs so I now have 4 GBs and 4 tanks suitable for STs, although 1 or 2 of these will be able to be isolated from the rest so that fish can be quarantined if necessary. They may also provide extra capacity when my trout put on a bit of "beef", I hope.

So, from left to right, I now have 2 uncut IBCs for FTs, 4 STs and 4 GBs.

I rigged up a bit of a "jig" to help me mark each of the tanks at the same height for cutting:

I used a "Dual Saw" to cut the "cages" into sections. Highly recommended. I see there's a rip-off of the original now being sold through hardware stores for about $80. I think this is my new favourite toy.

The "Dual Saw" made light work of cutting the cages without creating very many sparks. Still managed to catch lots of splinters in my clothing - LOL (not). The final cut was not all that smooth as you can see below but a buffer soon got rid of the rough edges.

Hi Pelican, This may give you an idea of how to connect you sumps together, then run to a BB from which you pump to your FT. This way you have built in taps to isolate each sump.

Thanks for your earlier suggestion Chainsaw. I do hope to connect my sump tanks in similar fashion to what shows in your picture. However, my outlets are larger, around 85mm I think, and I would like to use the taps that are already on those outlets and then continue the interconnection with as large a pipe as is feasible. I hope to maintain as much flexibility as possible here, thinking about future additions etc.

Do you think these connections will need to be in pressure pipe or could I get away with (say) 90mm PVC storm water pipes?

Cheers

I've ordered a Resun LP-40 air pump. It's supposed to come with a 12 outlet air divider. Do I need to connect up 12 air lines and fit them all with air stones to get the maximum benefit out of this pump?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers
