Joel,
It looks like you have used plain 19mm black piping to and from the blue drums. How have you connected the drain pipes?
Have you used a regular shower drain as per your larger grow beds in the book? Also what size is the larger white pipe sitting in the gravel? Surely it isn't standard stormwater pipes as I imagine this would take up too much room??

Thanks
James

GLR, some people have used a intact blue barrel on its side with a square section cut out on the top (side if you picture it upright).

Gives you about a 180L fish tank...........you could put 10 perch in there (until they grow bigger) if you maintained good DO, and it would service two half barrel grow beds beautifully.

See, you have your tank and beds for $40! (and if you're lucky you can find blue barrels that have had evening primrose oil in them and salvage a good 2 litres from the bottom  Thoust about this AFTER i had drained them :( )

I'm going to try my fish on meal worms (that is when I get the next system up and running and actually get some edible specimens). Anyone else tried them? (that is feeding them to fish)

I've just bought a small tub of meal worms with a view to learning more about how to breed and grow them.

I can certainly attest to the fact that Jade Perch eat them - I've just fed them three worms, none of which lasted long enough to hit the bottom of the tank.......and this is the first time my fish have ever had anything like that. Normally, they'll take time to get used to eating something different.

I've found some good breeding and rearing information on the Internet.

When you get the mealworms numbers up a bit it resembles something out of a science fiction show. The meal is moving and squirming with all the worms underneath. Slice up some apple and carrot and place it on the top they eat it from the bottom. Add a layer of cork board to the bottom of the tank or container, the beetles lay their eggs in it. Make sure to top up the meal or bran offten and keep it away from moisture. Thats about it.

I just picked up 6 drums for $15 each, the rest should be available next week. They've had hydrochloric acid in them which washes out very easily.
