Thank you gentlemen, I will check out the local stockfeed store and try to encourage them to grow in the back of my place.
I am surprised more members in WA are not using them as supplementary feed for trout (up to 25%) and silvers (up to 30%) according to that table Rupert linked to.

Blue lupins are no good. They contain anti nutritional factors in the form of alkaloids. Just go to your local stockfeed merchant and grab some. Even if they charge you double what a farmer wants you're still only likely to pay $6/kg.

Some WA grain growers are experimenting with pearl lupin (Lupinus mutabilis) which has a much more nutrient dense nutritional profile for fish feed. They are 18-20% oil, 3% of which is alpha linolenic acid (ALA) or the plant omega 3. Still high in protein and don't really have much of a shell like the commonly grown narrow leaf white lupin.

Hey Sleepe ,

Ask for flaked lupins (steamed and rolled ) works well as a supplement for larger fish.
From memory about 30/40 $ a 40kg bag

Cheers

Sorry to dig this old tread up, found it on a bit of a surf this morning.

Any chances of a photo Santalum? Or even better a video? Do you feed plants with the overflow?

I wonder if would be possible to grow glass shrimp in a IBC and feed a fish population in a backyard. Awesome post.

Ended up buying micronized lupins, 25kg for $27, sold half to someone I know who is into aquaponics.
I tried a couple, not a bad flavour, might try making a dahl with some of them, lots cheaper than lentils. :)
They are still a little hard and the skins are still there, for the goldies I think I will have to soak them or microwave them and skim off the skins unless someone has a better idea.

Just looks like a normal dam from where I grew up, are the glass shrimps native to the area? With that level of clarity is there much salt in the system?

Fresh as a daisy. You could drink if you dared. It is clear because the water fills the pond through subsoil inflows. There are no surface inflows so no silt. Shrimp aren't native out here but are native to the river system our farm drains into eventually.

Having access to a supply of lupins I might try to replicate your ecosystem in IBCs once I start my V2 build. Thanks for sharing.
