I'm not quite understanding how you will be able to cut off one tank if you want. Seems like from your diagram that they are linked in series so if you cut off one tank you are breaking the chain. Makes more sense to me if they are in parallel. Am I missing something? :?.

Hi scotty, the FT will be in series like you said. If I want to do some work on a FT without breaking the series I can do 2 things. Lets say I'm doing some work on FT number 3, in order not to break the chain I need to be able to keep FT number 2 and 4 connected, even though FT 3 is empty. I can do this because the fittings between the fish tanks allow for a bypass pipe to be installed. I'll take some pics of what I mean and upload them for you mate.

Thats some impressive earth works Andy :)
Thanks bnBob, by this stage I FULLY understand why you guys are using large containers as FT instead of using the ground, it's so much more difficult with a ground FT than a container of some sort.

hey mantis, I'm trying to keep the costs as low as possible too. If I could find IBC's i'm not sure the cost would allow me to use them. Eventually I hope to make my own concrete and stone GB and not use barrels or IBC at all. I live near a stone mine and I can find some really nice looking square stones that just look amazing, for FREE!!! I'll post some pics so you can see.

If this is something that is on the cards, i would suggest you go this route to start with. You are already planning to increase size in stages, so you can with your grow beds too. The reason being, plumbing can get expensive. Plus you dont want to have to do it all twice.

There is a system on here with hand made beds using bricks... Cant seem to recall who's system. I think it is in south africa....

You are right mate. I get a nice feeling when I think of doing the whole thing with stones, FT and GB. I can just imagine how nice it might look. Problem is i've never build a stone wall before.

An update.

Used polystyrene to line the sides of the fish tanks.

Filled the gaps with concrete

Ended up like this, ready to put pond liner.

Started the grow beds. Half cut barrels, today i'll be burying them in the soil so they are fully covered.
