Are frequently (or maybe even constantly?) used washing machine pumps able to work for long? If they break, can they release nasty stuff (lubricant...) in the water?

No lubricant in washing machine pumps, although I would question the safety issues and the reliability of using modern ones :)

I think washing machine motors are not made to run constantly. I use them on a timer in a flood and drain system . No I don't think there is any nasty things in there

I cut a hole in the tank lid and droped a 200mm pot in the hole and drained the GB's into it,
filled it with media and mint 8) don't want mint in GB

I have. It worked great for smaller holes. Most of the holes we have to drill are too big for most step bits.

I drilled loads of holes in barrels with spade bits. You just need to pulse and apply light pressure with a fast speed whilst slowly moving the drill in a circular rocking motion :). The spade bit needs to have the pointy bits on the tips or outer blades, the bigger they are the better... not the type that has just flat cutting blades. Those don't work...

On the issue of dishwasher/washing machine pumps, I highly recommend them. I've been using a variety of them (pulled out of machines dumped by the side of the road) for about 15 years now. There's a never ending supply of free ones out there and they generally last 18-24 months.
