Gees everyone wants to have a whine.... Fish vases can be done well, and can provide even better conditions than how they are kept in many aquarium stores. This doesn't mean to say that everyone does it well.

As already said, bettas do require a surface to breathe from. They can take oxygen from the water, but doing so exclusively is not enough.


I wouldn't use the pet store as a metric for minimal care though.

I think of a betta in a vase or cup like I think of putting a puppy in a crate 24/7 and letting them defecate in their own bed. Yes, it happens (i.e. in puppy mills), but doubling the crate is only nominally better.

Going back to the original post... thanks for sharing. It helps to see this to know that I'm overthinking my system :)
