Unfortunately I work full time and I don't live near my parents, so I can't do anything until this weekend. I've sourced some 205L containers that used to have oil or honey or something in them for $30 a pop. Decent price?

Mums starting to waver a little. She's suggesting other places I can put it. Right next to the 10,000L tank would be great as it's flat and spacious, but it's on the south side of the house and it wouldn't get nearly enough sun. Unless I rig up some mirrors, thats out of the question. I don't think she'll like it in the front yard either.

I better get it sorted where abouts its going before I get pumps and things (I might need to go solar).

Make a monstrosity in the front. While she's yelling and distracted over that, whip out the back and get stuck in.

Apparently $30 is on the expensive side for blue barrels (see this thread)

I might try shop around a little. I'm only going to get 3, so I dont think it's exorbitant. And all hobbys are expensive.

how secure is your inheritance?

It's been suggested elsewhere for reluctant spouses, get a small system running and plant it full of her favourite herbs or flowers, she'll be so impressed, you'll be able to do the bigger system.

If that really is an IBC (International Bulk Container?), then I might be able to save myself some hassles. I'm getting two after the australia day weekend so I may be able to take that one out and replace it with another. The ones I'm getting should be in pretty good nick compared to this one. Do all IBC's have a drain in the bottom like this one? I thought they all had cages around them too. It doesn't matter, I was just going to fill the drain anyway.

That is an old ibc you have there, the newer ones are a bit different. They have a tap in the side of the bottom rather than the hole/lid setup of yours. I have one similar which I cut in half to make my growbeds (pics here). The tin outer would be good for the tank as it will cut out lots of light which will protect the plastic from uv and keep the water shaded and reduce algae.

I went down last night and ran through what I'm going to do. She's ok with it (yay), though not overly excited. As long as it's not an eyesore to us or our neighbours.

An update on the power pole, apparently we were required to clear 1 m away from the post, my mum asked if they could just put it in next door and the neighbour agreed. So that's happening next thursday (7 days) and then I'll actually start setting up!

So after almost a month of delays, my local Landcraft store got in some barrels. Unfortunatley it was cherries in SO2, and I'm a bit worried about SO2 in the system. Apparently it's used to stop things from growing,....and I really want things to grow.

Anyway, I also picked up some poly pipe and 4 star pickets. I'm going to drive the star pickets in, and then put the poly pipe over the top. I have two lengths, so I'll end up with a dome. I will then cover that with some plastic and viola, I'll have a roof. Hopefully I'll get some time to do it this weekend.

SO2 is very soluble in water, I wouldn't worry about it. Set the system up and leave it running for a while (a good plan anyway). add some seasol and see if you can get some algae to grow.

SO2 is more of a yeast / mould inhibitor than a bac. inhibitor, isn't it?

No idea, it is certainly used for things like dried fruit and wine, but it might inhibit bacteria too.
