 Woohoo! I finally did it. I got this footage on my phone yesterday and managed to get it on to facebook, that was the easy part, now it is here and displayed as planned. Oh yeah! Sorry that I didn't get growbeds and greenery in the background, but this way there is no interferance. Not bad hey? Throw feed with one hand and hold camera as still as possible with the other. The only water loss is the evaporation  and what the fish splash out. No fish jumped out during the filming of this feeding frenzy :D

you realise that calling them your babies is getting attached to your food source, ours get called idiots cos they hit the sides of the tank at full speed whenever you get near making it sound like you discharged a shotgun shell in a steel drum.

Excellent -

Do you have trouble with root-rot with a constant flood ?

And if i wanted to give it a shot, could i just make bell siphons and not put the bell on to get the constant flood?

I'm setting up to have 6 growbeds linked to a 1500L tank and a couple of 500L sumps interconnected.

The pump in the sumps, going to FT - then SLO grav fed back to GBs..

Sorry newbie here :)

yes. AFAIK you can just pull the bell off the siphon to switch to CF.

do you still need the 2 x 6mm holes in the base of the standpipe, or would that skrew up the siphon ?
Just gives the choice of trying both methods

My goal if possible is to be able to try siphon / constant flood and timed f/drain with the same system without mod (other than adding a timer or removing the bell)

You can drill the two holes and turn your standpipe so they are closed if you want to use a syphon, that way you have the option of timed flood n drain as well as constant flood or bell syphon

Mine is CF but I throw the bells on now and then to drain my beds right down to dislodge possible solids build up in some areas. Gives the media a good flush out anyway.

yea mate, in case I have a pump failure my beds will drain throught these holes. They dont have any effect on the syphons when I drop the bells in.

Maybe so  , but in the meantime I got out the smoker. Here is a preview of what I spent the morning doing.

Well I headed out for the smoker but began trimming the tomato plants and snacking on cherry toms, kale, celery and parsley, then I discovered that my broccoli are beginning to head up, yeeha!

Even I am surprised at the growth that I am seeing in just a couple of days, these chinese mega cabbages are going crazy.

The mustard leaf, cabbage and chard have filled out their bed.

Today I made a total salad all from my growbeds, it included a ripe tomato that had been picked green weeks ago and left to ripen on the edge of the bed, cherry tomatoes, about four different lettuce varieties, celery, beetroot leaves, red and green mizuna, spring onions, parsley leaves and anything else edible that I could find. It looked a little dull until I add the boiled eggs.

I smoked two trout that I took from the freezer this morning and snacked on the flesh as I gently peeled it back from the bones, it was melt in your melt delightful, moist and smokey.

This was the finished result.

Sundays harvest - from the rest of the garden.

I really am aiming to be able to provide enough to live by just adding some basics. Milk, butter and cheese would be a nice addition, I am thinking about those mini milking goats but imagine they would require a lot of work. One step at a time.

But... but... they are her babies. She names them and everything. Although a cradle next to the window might be a better place for them.
