thanks Charlie..I really dont see it breaking down that quickly if anything Im worried that the bamboo will come back to life lol

in other news tested some leakage from my wormfarm for lols today I did them in the API 5ml tubes and ran b/w a 1 in 5 - 1 in 10 dilution - worm leachate to tap water
ie samples had b/w .5 to 1m worm leachate per 5m tap water
tap water ph = 6.0 or below
sample ph = 7.2
sample Am = 8 or above
sample Ni = ~0
sample Na = ~0

not what I expected although there were a number of dead worms in the leachate which account for the Am readings.

I didnt expect the pH swing to be so drastic or there to be a 0 nitrate reading

Fabian the Weird phoam looks to be dissolved organics..

The only way that I know to get rid of it is to use a phoam fractionator..
- I know how to make one..

Type in phoam in the koiphen site and there should be a few designs there..

I will be making one for myself.. later..

It could be disolved organic solids, the only reason I would question it is because the foam showed up almost immediately, as soon as the filter started running.

makes me wonder if its some kind of resin leached from the bamboo

resin from the bamboo would itself be a disolved organic solid....

I guess thats true? I havent read much about dissolved organic solids and m understanding is that it is due to breakdown of organic matter etc.....I was hoping whatever it was would gas off...but not sure that it will

I say some kind of resin quite loosely because it could be anything, there has been very little break down of the bamboo so far most of it is still green, leaves are still intact etc

no smell I can detect.. although the barrel did have pickles or something in it previously and I cant really smell anything except that

Thanks for the link Snow

I am a little confused..

I have been looking at protein skimmers and foam fractionators these lighten the load on the biological filter.. meaning that without them the biological filter is able break down these same amino acids/proteins etc..

although skimmers may also remove inorganics like iodine & copper which would not be broken down.

I can find very little information on "disolved organic solids"

there must be a more widely used and accepted phrase, this may be dissoved organic carbon.

this leads me to conclude bamboo->leaks C-> makes microbes->fish eat microbes -> I eat fish

the bamboo is both acting as a habitat and a food source, this should work as long biological filter is not overcome in the process.

assumining the issue of fish/human/bamboo toxicity is irrelevant

so I have 50 sp @ around an inch long ie ~ 3g each

this leads me to conclude that I should be feeding 12g per day at 8% feed rate

Nah... you should be feeding about 7.5-8 gms per day (at 5%).... split between 3-5 feeds...
