Could we get a recipe , please?
we did a simple Jamie Oliver rub with oil, chilli, garlic and lemon baked in a hot (220) oven for 15-20 mins depending on the size of your fish. Was simply yummy.

Love your setup - very tidy :)

We're just starting out (small) in Lonnie with 2 x 1000L IBC's and a few GB's (in construction phase)

At the moment we're puzzled about licensing and restrictions imposed by IFS (their website doesn't really offer any useful information regarding AP) and I've waited all day for them to return my call...

I've heard: there's a maximum limit of 50 trout per licensee - if they're brown trout, there must be public access for others to fish (!!!) but if you stock rainbows this isn't necessary.
Fingerlings can only be purchased from a licensed breeder and must be delivered by them (pickup illegal) at a cost per km on top of call-out. Licenses are $130 for 3 yrs.

No license / hassles with goldies, but don't go so well on the BBQ :P

Can you sort the fact from fiction? What are the restrictions on salmon?

300 RTs over 3 years allowed or more by application for bigger systems
Salmon not allowed. Neither are browns
Licences are $130/3years
And yes you are meant to use a registered fish transporter unless you can find a hatchery that will sell direct to you. But you will need high O2 abilities during transport

Hope that helps. My entire system (-glasshouse) is for sale as I'm building a new house and there isn't capability for it in the design. And I'm planning extended trips away regularly for the next two weeks so it has to go unfortunately

Cheers
T

Yeh sorry meant two years. And no at this stage I have no plans for an ap at the new place. Just a standard veg patch again. :-(

Huh? It's not that big. With 50+ rainbow trout at 350-500gms in it they often look as if there is only enough room. I wouldnt want anything smaller for the sake of the fish health. I don't like seeing fish crammed into undersized tanks. It also increasees risk of injury, stress and disease...

Hey Tony... awesome build. I just went through it all the way. I'm impressed that it is Tasmanian too!

Got a few questions...

When you were delivered 650 RT and gave the excess away to of interested people... were they also aquaponists? If so, how many are down here? It would be great to get us together because as you've mentioned in Tassie there are fairly unique (for Australia) issues to overcome associated with the cold and short daylength in the winter and the heat in the summer (not to mention all the red tape).

Where did you get the BYAP system down here???

How did your system/fish cope with the insanely hot weather we've had (until today *shivers*)? I lost all my RT this summer as the water temp. in my system hit 31. I'm going fishing tomorrow evening to try and catch some River Blackfish to try instead.

G'day there....

Glad to hear another Taswegian in the midst. To answer your questions:
1. The excess went to people with farm dams. One was 3 acres in size and spring fed so are doing well.
2. I got the BYAP system from Melb. Cost about $450 delivery. My whole system is for sale as is. I am about to shut it down completely this weekend as everything has to go unfortunately. That is tanks, beds, timers, auto feeders, stands, plumbing, the lot.
3. Yes, the warmer weather is nasty. Hence a bigger tank with lots of shade does the trick. They suffered a bit but all survived no probs. Just make sure your air supply is adequate and decrease feeding.
4. River black fish are threatened and only able to be fished with a licence. If IFS find out you transfer them to an AP system, and now you've posted online, it would be a rather nasty fine...

Cheers

Bummer to hear you're pulling out Tony, you've done some pretty impressive stuff and certainly added to the knowledge base for AP.

Cheers

Is all good. I have a permit and am working closely with Tim Farrell @ IFS.

Pity you are pulling the whole thing down.

Interesting that Tim (or more so the Director of IFS) will approve native Black fish when I couldn't even get Salmon..
