Wow, they are beautiful!!! The Temno look like something called Hydra here, although I don't think hydra are parasitic. So what would happen if you just scaped them off? Or is that not adviseable on something with good claws? I guess the salt bath would get ones you didn't see or couldn't reach. I would expect that there is a free-swimming stage for the Temno, so somehow you would have to cleanse the environment or do repeated baths to break the reproduction cycle? I remember when I brought fleas in to my strictly indoor cat. I got rid of them by combing her with a flea comb every night. Females fleas need blood to reproduce. So every night, I eliminated the fleas that were getting ready to reproduce. It didn't matter if I got the males or not. Eventually they lived their life in my carpet or whatever, and died. There was no next generation.

...just pondering aloud.

Nice looking setup Simmo, pity that remedial info was removed - do you have it all planted in the AP memory banks (I may need to reference it in the future  )

Yeah, I was a bit dissapointed about that... I liked having a resident cray expert - oh well.

I still have my login to the craymates site and still intend to go through the salt bathing regime to get rid of the Temno, so I will get the details and post them here.

Yeah, I came across pics of hydra while researching temno, some of them do look very similar. Temno are not parasitic either they are epibionts, and they only pose a problem to the crays when they are present in very large numbers, but I would like to get rid of them just the same.

Scraping them off wouldn't be much fun, and I don't think it would be possible to get them all off. A regime of salt bathing is the way to go apparently, every other day until they are all gone.

OK, time to update you on my Marron...

While I was away I had a number of deaths, half of which were due to Marron escaping and drying out in the summer heat, the other half I think was probably caused by the heat and the low do levels.

My GF caught a marron in the act of escaping and took some pics for me, these were taken on the 25/1/06 my gf tells me it was a hot day and apparently there was a heatwave in Perth around Australia day.

The next system will definitely have to be escape proof. This one certainly isn't...

While I'm at it, here are some pics of the baby Marron that I have had in the aquarium inside for a month or two. There are about 10-15 in there, and roughly another 30-40 in the main system.

Their colourings are very pretty, especially along their tail and claws...

Awww, so cute. I have more pics which I will put up on my album at some stage.

I was shocked when I first saw the baby marron as I thought that I only had the one female (Sharon the Marron) in the system and she died before Xmas. She must have hatched them before her demise as they were found in the same tank that she was in.

For the remaining two Marron I will probably put them into the aquarium inside (to beat the heat, and so they can't escape) and move all of the littlies into the aqua system. This system will be large enough to house them for at least a few months and give me some time to plan and build my next (bigger, better) aqua system.

The third pic in the second post looks like he's smiling :)

They're quite beautiful, and the escapee looks huge. Welcome back and good eats!

the baby marron look like a great addition to the aquarium. very nice looking specimen's.

well done on your efforts rearing them to this stage. will be interesting how long they take to reach maturity in your system.

nice work mate.

I have no idea how old Rupert, I think from memory they were in between 2 and 300grams each when I got them. Check back to the start of the thread I'm pretty sure there are pics of them there.

I think they have only moulted once since I have had them, not sure exactly how long it takes to grow out to legal size. I will do my best not to kill my baby ones and we'll see how long it takes I guess :)

Heres some pics of the Marron that I ended up putting in the tanks today. There are 10 in all, 4 in one tank and 3 in the next. They are bigger than I wanted, as you can see in the second picture; they were all a similar size, a bit bigger than legal size (76mm from tip of the horn to end of carapace) at around 110mm to 130mm.

There you go, that was back in September, almost 6 months ago.

I would guess that the two I have left are around the 130-140mm mark, a good size for eating. I'm annoyed at the fact that I had so many of about the same size die/dissapear due to misadventure. :(
