The pond has a number of plants in there and has a sludge on the bottom which would contain significant amounts of Carbon, so I doubt that that is the answer.

I wish it was as simple as that, I had tried oaten straw, as I had no barley straw available, but it caused no improvement in the algae situation.

The water trough remains clear all year around and while it is under the shade of the trees, it would otherwise have clogged with algae, as the pond had.

The pond has half a dozen goldies from 25mm to 75 mm long. They feed on insects and foliage from the plants in the pond.
