Some very sad news - all of my large silver perch, and all but two of the small ones have suddenly died. There were two large ones that were still alive, but were euthanised. They hadn't been dead long - they were still intact, and no obvious injury. There are three frogs in the tank and the water looks OK.

The other half gutted one of the fish and said that the innards were very loose - I don't know if there is a technical term for that?

The 10 large silvers were in a 1kL tank with 1 GB, running 15/15 F&D and backup air. There has been no power failure, and the system is still working. It's a mystery!

The neighbours are a good distance away - I live on an acre (4000sqm). Nothing in the bottom of the tank except a small amount of uneaten food - probably from this morning's feed as they are still in shape.

Fortunately the barra are OK - and the two systems aren't connected.

The last two small silver perch died today. I still have three frogs in the tank. How successful is frogaponics?

The water tests were fine 7.6 pH, no ammonia or nitrite and 40ppm nitrates.

If it was a bacterial infection, any suggestions on cleaning pipes etc? Fortunately I want to replace the flexible pipe from the pump with a rigid one, so that pipe will be discarded anyway.

So sorry to hear that. What have you topped up with and how recent? I always think sudden deaths are due to contamination.

The only topping up I have been doing in that system was filling up a 10L bucket with cold water (from the mains) and pouring it into the GB about 2 hours later when the GB was flooded. I do that several times every day. I hadn't disturbed any roots in the GB and there was nothing in the tank apart from that morning's food. It's a mystery!

I had completely cleaned the bottom of the tank about four months ago, after the trout came out.

The frogs are very happy in there, but all the silvers died at once (within 24 hours).

I just bought the 7mm feed last month. The 3mm feed is older, but I put in a teaspoon or so for the little ones. The barra are perfectly happy with the feed.

I replaced the ammonia and nitrate bottles in the last six months, so I'm sure the water tests are right.
