Hiya..

Personally, and this is All me.. I would not use anything of organic in nature to filter water thru especially as it is not growing, but will decompose over time..

I don't know what you will introduce to your Pond system by doing So....

I would Shout a Screaming STOP...

I just realised probably one of the cheapest media's for a bio filter..
Is the plastic strapping that is used to bind Boxes..

the guys' on Koiphen use this as a media in a Modified/simple version of the Moving media barrel..
- they only provide air to the system when they clean the system and dump the waste to the garden..
There is something like 9000ft of strapping per brand new Reel and I don't think it is that expensive maybe $50-70 per reel..
http://www.qispackaging.com.au/Product/ ... cStrapping

I think they get 2 filter out of each reel..

So i would say think.. first..

im going to a trial to see if it kills the fish before adding it to a system with edible fish. Most likely I would need to cure it with soaking/boiling/baking rather than using raw like I am in this trial to limit decomp

but thank you for the link to the strapping

fabian it is an organic material.. I just think the idea is good but I think it will cause Problems..

One of the waste product's of organic material breaking down is the production of hydrogen sulphide which is Toxic to us in concentrations that we can't smell it[Egg gas] and is also toxic to fish..

Juergen..

Psst a Box of Strapping[1000m] is only $25.00..

it may cause problems.. that is what a trial is for! I would like to reduce my usage of plastics where possible.

anywho pump has been running for a few hours now, should get goldies in a few days..I cant really be bothered testing water levels

there are heaps of bubbles in the water... quite large clear bubbles...well see if they go down

Where are the bubbles coming from? As in floating on top and being created by the water draining back into the tank, or from a mechanical air bubbler?

you could try scoria as a filter medium as well, hay thinking out side of the box though you may hit on a winner!

bubbles are floating on top caused by water falling from filter back into white box fish tank - look as if there is a light detergent in the system (which there is not)

I assume bubbles are natural resins or something from the cut bamboo

yeah will use scoria or something similar if this doesn't work..

goldfish is still alive and eating in the trial system.. bamboo is still green and foam has has pretty much abated

there has been alot of talk about pH and alkalinity on the forum..I am interested if the gradual break down of organic material which is primarily cellulose C6H10O5 would cause a drop or rise in pH?

Fabian your Filter, where does the water enter and where does it exit..

does it have any Dead spots where water will sit..?

Keep your nose ready for the smell of Egg's..
If you smell rotten egg's.. Be very careful, that is the smell indicator for Hydrogen sulpide[ H2S ]

Very poisonous..
