Funny you should say that Rupe, as food conversation ratio was one (among others)of my determining reasons for choosing silvers over Jades, our DPI state it the other way around - silvers have a better FCR as compared to Jades and Barra...

This on Jade perch -
Quote:
"The food conversion ratios (FCR) vary depending upon the level of management with 1.2:1 for fingerlings to 1.6:1 for growout being achievable."

this on barra -
Quote:
" Feed conversion ratios (total weight of fish produced per total dry weight of feed consumed) of 1.2: 1 to 1.8: 1 can be expected in well managed operations at optimum temperatures."

and for Silvers -
Quote:
"The Food conversion ratio (FCR) ranges from 1.2:1 for fingerlings to 1.5:1 for growout. That is, it takes 1.5 kg of food to produce 1.0 kg wet weight of fish."

so I know it's only small between Jade 1.6:1 and Silvers 1.5:1 but it helped in deciding on silvers. Do you have different info regarding FCR's? I'd be keen to read it?

YAY  Last night the boss cooked up burgers for dinner and guess what??

I hear you all say "what?"

In response to the eagerly asked "what?" you all said - we had our first produce from our AP set-up. So that is 6 weeks and 1 day from putting water in the fish tank to using our first produce - Whoo-hoo, Wifey is loving it!! She's had to stake the tomatoes in the bottom growbed and will soon need to in the top growbed.

On the fish side of things, I haven't seen any floaters, but I do have 3 bolters, they are double the size of everyone else. I've put in 350g of feed since the beginning - missed a bit of feeding with some long work times, but the little silvers all seem to have increased hugely - although I know they couldn't have; with the initial 100 and their FCR and assuming equal growth from all of them (although we know that doesn't happen) each silver has put on around 2.33g HUGE hey?

Hey Rupert, you're a funny bugger ain't ya? Made me chuckle

So here's a pic of the growbeds, taken with mobile phone, so nowhere near as special as Faye's pics, but you get the idea.

No pics of fishies, the silvers are a bit shy :( so it is a bit hard to see them. Wifey and I are talking about putting some gravel or sand on the bottom of the FT to be able to see them better - maybe pics then

Don't do it!!!
You will promote anaerobic bacterial growth from unused food and fish poop rotting that can't be cleaned out because it is caught in the gravel/sand. You will kill fish and upset the balance of your system by increasing Oxygen demand, increased Ammonia levels and bad smelly water.
Don't do it!
Cheers IanK

Sorry, Mike, just sent you an email and hadn't looked at my thread first. Not sure how hot/cold the days are - I just get on with my day if it's hot or cold - Boss says I'm crazy as I don't really get bothered either way??? but our water temp was 17.2 deg this morning at 0700hrs after going through the gb's all night and just about 19 deg after dinner tonight around 1900hrs if that helps.
