In all of your growbeds there is a section of black corrugated pipe. What role does the pipe have in the system?

Hi Trox:
The corrugated pipe is part of the "standpipe" drain as in Joel's setup. The pipe has little slits in it so the water drains from the gravel. There is a slot at the bottom of the PVC pipe (which is inside the black corrugated pipe) so that water can tricle out slowly. The top of the PVC pipe determines the flood level - when water reaches this level it just pours out the drain as fast as it comes in. When the timer shuts the pump off, the water trickles out through the slots somewhat slowly. The next time I use this black pipe I will be drilling more holes in it, as the rectangular grow bed is overflowing because the little slits aren't enough.

Looks excellent mate, the beds get lots of sun by the looks and they help shade the tank a bit too i'd imagine.

Sneak peek!

Styrofoam (the stuff looks like it has mylar on the one side, doors on front have been removed) grow box, lights, wire mesh for climbing plants around the perimeter, plywood + styrofoam + pond liner + gravel grow bed, "Auto Siphon in a Bucket(tm)", the usual boring 100 gallon tub, some small continuous pump. The shelving on the right would have the 30 gallon rackmount system on it. The basement sump pump is in the empty area on the left.

Wow, great pic. I thought it was real for a sec. Great and realistic looking shadows (and everything for that matter)
