i must be thinking of different wire, the one i have has square holes maybe 1cm. the horizontal and vertical wires seem bonded.

That is actually what I used Steve. I feel it is safe because it inside the cement and has no contact with the water.

Steve,
Sorry, I thought you were talking about the chicken wire I am using (for my chickens). The one dthawk is using is welded at the wire crossings, then galvanised.

Normally, steel for concrete reinforcement is not galvanised. I don't know of any reason (other than perhaps the cost of the galvanising) why this is so.

In an alkaline situation like encased on concrete, corrosion of the steel would not normally be an issue. Perhaps that is why?

Would the use of galvanised wire cause issues with the concrete?

Not as far as I am aware of (used in ferrocement for boats). Its the cost factor normally in building construction.
