I'm gonna try to get some pics of them cause they are soooo cute. :) They are only about 10mm long at this stage, but they still rear up defensively with their claws (all 1mm long of them) showing when you walk up to the aquarium. Funny stuff.

S77, I called my mate and he got his marron from Black Claw Marron in Denmark.
I cant seem to get them at the moment (probably away for Chrissy) but i did send a fax and asked if they can send me a pricing list of their product range, so I`ll see what happens.

gnash06, you should be able to get juvenile marron from most marron farms or one of the Marron co-ops over the next few months. They usually charge between 0.30 - 0.50 cents each for em though at that price they usually expect you to buy 100 or more. Still, it works out much cheaper than paying $35 a kilo for em. Cheaper still, the Marron season opens on the 12th Jan so why not go out and catch yourself a few?? Suppose there wouldnt be many out round Kalgoorlie way though.

Ohh yeah, forgot to mention. The Yabbie free zone lies to the west of Albany Highway though this only applies to the stocking of Yabbies in farm dams. There are however plenty of dams in this zone where Yabbies have been introduced in the past. As for Thelohania there has been no cases of it occuring in marron as yet and only a small number of yabbies that were brought in from the eastern states have been affected.

Troutman, was hoping I could put the squeeze on some of the marron farms to give the forum members a discount,I know 30-50c is good BUT why not try for better! That way if we could organize everybody who wants them,we can do big orders cheaply and the farmers get honorable mention on here.
=win/win situation.

Wow, has it been that long???

Hi guys I'm back, been away on business and haven't had much of a chance to check out the forum for a while. I've got some serious reading ahead of me, so many new systems and members :)

I also have news of my own, I have both baby yabbies AND marron 8) in my systems and lots of pics to share of both.

Seeing as this is my yabby system thread, here are some pics of the ones that hatched just before Xmas (actually, the last female hatched hers after the new year).

Image

A pic of one in the aquarium, I had around 80-100 of these guys in that 4 foot tank inside until yesterday, their mothers have been back in the main tank since they hatched. I started with around 200 easy.

Speaking of the main tank, I reckon I have at least 200 baby yabbies in there also (plus MORE berried females). The only reason I separated the four females before Xmas was to ensure that the majority of the babies survived, I needn't have bothered it seems. I didn't reckon on them being able to survive in the main tank because of the large yabbies and mozzie fish in there but I guess they are pretty hardy.

Image

I scooped up a few out of the aquarium and photographed them to show the variation in size and colour. The largest hatched around the 20th December so is around 10 weeks, smallest was hatched after new years (7-8 weeks). I'm not sure why that little guy is so small compared to the rest. Perhaps the bigger ones accelerate in growth due to the fact that they can bully the others around when it comes to meal times and get the most food.

Image

These show the difference in colour, in sunlight they are still slightly translucent but their colourings show up more prominently.

I put these guys into the main tank and the job for today will be moving the rest of the babies into there so I can clean out the aquarium and set it up with some nice fresh rainwater as a purging tank for some of the big ones. Yummy!!!
