I could be totally wrong, but i suspect you might possibly be over-estimating the tilapia's root eating habits, especially the babies/juveniles. I would be tempted to experiment with no gauze at first and add later if necessary. If adequate food is provided they might not bother with the roots. Perhaps someonne else has first hand exp of this...
