Thanks everyone for the replies.

An update on my system. I purchased a larger tub and made the bell syphon slightly different.
This one has a lot better syphon cycle.





I tried a small bend in the other tub, but I think it's just too shallow. I will keep it as is, and see how it goes with the fast cycle. I guess it's more like a constant flood style.

I have also put 3 yabbies in the tank, and 4 goldfish to get it started.

The volcanic rock introduced a lot of dirt to the system even though I spent ages washing the stones. I saw a few other posts about putting egg white in to gather the dirt. This worked perfectly, but now it smells. I think I will just cycle the water.
