LOL Rob_K, I also remember places where the Electric Co mounted transformers on external walls of buildings
residents inside those buildings could coil insulated wire on the wall inside adjacent to where the transformer is
mounted and thus harvest free power.

I would not recommend, illegally tapping into power lines, however if the Electric Co has power lines
running past your house they normally are quite happy to supply you as a customer?

After being let down by a complete greedy git on Gumtree I have decided to not use IBCs at all and custom build my sump tank, fish tank and grow beds.

I was going to completely bury the sump tank and I thought what is the point of digging a big hole and then putting an IBC in it when I could just buy a pond liner for a fraction of the cost. We have very shallow topsoil and a hard shale subsoil so trying to dig down a metre to bury an IBC might have been a chore. If I go for a pond liner I can dig down as far as is practical and make the size of the hole equal to 1000 litres. So if I can only go down 500mm then I can make the hole 1000mm x 2000mm x 500mm for example.

The fish tank can be built half in the ground and built up with wood and the growbeds can be at ground level built out of wood and pond liner.

Can you see any problems with this plan?

Paul

You might also be able to use wide concrete pavers without mortar up to about 1 ft above the ground.

If you do use mortar then you could build over the fish tank with your growbeds. look at a few of the converted swimming pool to AP builds. There was one where it was decked over the pool to give it like a patio with grow beds.

I was given an old IBC. it is not ideal as it has a hole where we don't want a hole and it has had some nasty stuff in it in the past but as it was free I have decided to use it anyway and line it with a pond liner.

I have sunk the fish tank into the ground for a number of reasons but mainly because I want to use it later as a sump tank. I also wanted a bit more height above the growbeds for growing and the whole thing seems less imposing in the dome now it is buried.

The growbed is just placed there at the moment. I am going to build an insulated top for the fish tank and the growbed will sit on top of that.

Hi Paul,

I will follow your build with interest.

I'm located in Denmark and am planning a 19' dome greenhouse.

I want to put fish tank and filters in the ground as well.

Thinking of digging a channel full circle and create a current going round. Trout would love that!

Cheers - Jens
