Anyone have a take on Growing Power's method of constant height rock beds and then sticking compost based pots in the media to wick up?

No reason to think it wouldn't work Jason. It's pretty old school in some ways. Getting the mix right is the hard part.

In my book its best to separate wicking beds from the fish
Reason if your plants need spraying [white fly ] ect ect you can spray them no problem
If your fish get itch you can salt and it doesn't effect the plants
Also just draw off some fish water for the wicking beds then when you top up the fish benefit

Those are good points, I was mostly looking at it from the watering aspect and wasn't really considering the treatment aspects or the control of fertilization which is a big part of this. A lot more people are moving to separate the fish and plants for these reasons.

My wicking beds drain into there own 200 liter sump also another benefit is you can add sea sol thrive or any of those commercial additives without harming the fish
I have added at times iron potash lime to sweeten the ground
I had an infestation of cabbage moth just a light dusting with cabbage dust cleaned it up That I wouldn't do with fish water
