the system gets light all day and being in a narrow area and on the side of the house, it gets partial wind protection from the heavy winds. since we are only renting the house I had to use my noodle a bit with the design. I made it in a modular format so when the time comes to move into a new house I can make it fit in all sorts of weird configurations. the pump is a 1000LPH and the system has 13 barramundi in the fish tank and 1 barramundi in the sump tank for mozzie control. the system has 6 "pots" that are hooked on the side of the fish tank and are gravity fed with 6mm black tubing and all pots meet into a common return line back to the sump tank, I have the heavier feeding and long term plants in them so we don't use the grow beds for the faster growing plants that harvested on a more regular basis. there is a NFT system that runs the entire length of the frame that the grow beds sit on for the plants that like wet feet strawberries etc, 2 rafting tanks for the watercress and lettuces and the 6 grow beds, everything that is on a frame is plumbed into a common line (2") back into the sump tank. total system volume is 1900 litres and I have designed the system so if there is a pump failure or black-out, the grow beds have a volume of water remaining and so the sump tank and fish tank don't run dry or overflow, all gravity fed pots loose suction at a certain water level (if that makes any sense). everything we grow is all heirloom and we avoid that nasty GMO stuff like the plague. there is a very basic swirl filter that I collect the heavier solids from the fish tank that I put into the worm farm and in return I give the system a boost every once in a while with some liquid worm casts. each grow beds has worms in them, but since I get sooooo much fertilizer from the worm farm I figure why not boost the system a bit. all in all we are super happy with what we have and being our first system it was certainly a good learning curve and a blast to design and build.
