Blue 15 gal drums are to supply evaporated water loss. Im going away for 2 weeks and wanted to make sure the pump did not go dry. Its been cycling for a week and Im a little nervous leaving it alone. Last set of tests show low ph 6 and ammo of 4

Stay tuned for more info. Big system might start in the fall.

A very tidy looking system there Pershing.

What is that you have on your fish tank to top up the water? Its a bit hard to make out in the photo.

Its a float switch. As the float comes up it presses against the washer and stops the flow. If the float comes down it will let the gravity fed water in. Im hoping it will work as design since I will be away for a few weeks and dont want to kill the pump and start over...

Nothing wrong... you've just begun to cycle....just don't add any more ammonia...

But perhaps add some lime/hydrated lime... to raise the pH back up....

Rupert, thx, why lime and not baking soda for example. First time I hear this alternative. What are its benefits over other bases? Thanks...

Baking Soda... is Sodium bicarbonate... and can be used as a pH up buffer...

But as Sodium isn't generally required by plants.. to the extent that they require Calcium.. and/or Potassium...

It's better to pH adjust/alternate... between a Calcium and Potassium compound...

Thanks Rupert, that's exactly the kind of quick straight answer that helps to build my knowledge base. Awesome, learn something new every day :)
