Ah, looked metalic in the picture.
Yea you will want something more rigid to hold the gravel back anyway. A 4 or 6" PVC pipe with slits cut part way through it usually works very well as a gravel guard. I actually have a couple beds I need to make new gravel guards for since the ones in those beds seem to have clogged up. (the old ones were the corrugated, perferated drainage tubing but they are not perferated enough and even the extra cuts I put in them are not enough for constant flood beds getting a heavy solids load.)

I just put the clay ball media in it - the screen held up fine (for now) if I had gravel or expanded shale it would not have. I will be getting some 6" PVC in about 2-3 month - well i will get left over PVC when I help my friend bury a new drain line - I am hoping I do not have to buy any :)

Tired though - I had to unload 45 bags from the back of a semi into my truck. Then unload it from my truck to the greenhouse. I am not as young as I used to be :)

Part of the advantage to the rigid pvc sleeve is that you can rotate it to cut/clean roots. Once you have mature plants the roots will grow everywhere including into your drain and stem pipe. If left unchecked it will eventually clog and backup your grow bed.

This is the start of my seed starting station. It is between both lids to the tank. 1.5 inches higher on one side that I will "T" off a water line & let it flow in slowly. The lower side will have a drain that will flow back into the tank. No soil will be used in this starter. It will hold 120 seedlings. This is just to automate the watering. More pics to come when I get it finished
