Those oaks must be desert adapted species. David Attenborough said that that a mature english oak pumped out water at a rate about the same as a firehose on 'private life of plants'.

don't forget a mature oak tree (i'm talking through my arse here) isn't growing at a very fast rate, the tommies grow at ightning speed, and much of the composotion of the new plant and fruit material is water. Dunno....................

But you'd be surprised at how many animals "take a sip" when you're not looking :)

Ooops...of course Ozzies would not be familiar with our geography. The oaks are certainly adapted to the desert. Arizona is a well-known desert state. Regardless, we are talking about full-sized trees.

Thanks, Janet - not a lot of oak trees around here, and no splashing ( I have had splashing at times, and it gets rid of a lot of water very quickly ), but plenty of thirsty wildlife. The visiting birds are getting a drink at the only free water around, and I think they might be taking a few insect pests with them, I'm having no problems with the usual gang of destructive bugs and grubs. The bees spend a lot of time here too, all welcome. Hot, dry winds here today, sucking the moisture out of everything !

Spectacular weather here on the plains last night, house-shaking thunder, 360 deg lightning, dogs huddled under the bed, and BIG rain for a while around midnight. I love it, as long as there's no fires and no flying roofs, especially mine !
