This is my first little desktop system I started bout 6months ago. It is super simple to build using a 1-1/2 gal fish tank, a rubbermaid tote, a small recirculating water pump, an additional small air pump in the fish tank, and 1-1/2 piece of styrofoam to float the net pots. The hardest thing about the whole system is drilling 2 holes in the plastic fish tank (I suggest clamping 2 thin pieces of wood on both sides of plastic before drilling. The system works with the water pump in the bottom of the tote pumping continous to the fish tank, in turn the fish tank just overflows back into the tote. It has completely cycled now and I'm growing some Sweet Basil, Swiss Chard, Rosemary, Romaine Lettuce and 2 Bamboo stalks. All are growing great.

File comment: This is about a week after building. At first I used worm tea to feed plants.

This looks great!!

My first system was even smaller. I think it was no more than 2 gal. did not know much about anything back then, but it worked. Sort-of. I had a growbed made with aquarium gravel. (NOT good).
Anyway, my plants were all growing horizontally towards the sunlight from the adjacent window..
Ended up killing a whole bunch of fish, and learning a lot..
