Sorry C1. We're having a big ol' hot spell here and temps are 32C+ (very unusual). I was worried about my trout cooking so I switched the pump that was going to my box filter to the mini fridge to try and keep things cool. I was hoping the beds would provide enough filtration, but overnight the nitrite spiked on me and I've lost about half my trout so far.

This is what I get for trying to be crafty.

After a month of waiting for Oregon F&W to grant me a license, I finally called them to get a status update. I've been informed that they will be sending out an biologist to inspect my facility. Seriously... For 150 gallons of tilapia or trout! We're talking 50-100 fish a year here. I had zero interest in selling fish or anything but considering the massive amount of hoops, I'm thinking I'm gonna scale this puppy up if I'm approved. Wish me luck!

I've been there too. Framed my "holders permit". I also have to submit a paper every June explaining how many lbs of fillets I produced. If they breed I need a culture permit and if I sell them I need a Fish farmers permit. Just say $50...$50...$50 Feel like a John on Bourbon St. N.O. La.

We're normally 12-20c, so it's hot to me. 32 isn't bad but it's gone as high as 36.

BTW. I have one lone trout left. Good thing I didn't take the goldfish out yet. Calling my trout supplier today.

It's been fun. The last bit was that they wanted me to certify the fish for $2,000. Fortunately, after much deliberation, I got them to tell me the names of the certified suppliers and one has offered me a breeder set. So as soon as I get my tank built, we'll try the tilapia experiment.

Thanks for the warning! I'm sure thats on the horizon! So you will get certification papers with your breeding pair? If you don't mind pm or share the name of the supplier. Thanks Bill.

Too late. Used all the ice I had before work, but just not enough. No more trout until the weather starts getting colder. Trout are just too dern sensitive for a 150 gallon tank.

Correct.
What size fingerlings can you get? Best to wait until after the hot weather, grab the largest fingerlings you can get, fatten them up and eat them before the summer returns.

Great read Goola - pity the crud you have to go through just to chuck some fish in a tank.

Will wait to see what happens with your permits...

Do Tilapia taste any good?
