Must say I'm a little excited about the potential of AP.

Still have no fish, but went out yesterday and bought a few plants. Dosed the system with Seasol and got my husband to "dose" the tank (since I'm not equipped to do so)

These are my readings so far

9/6
PH 7.6
AM .25
NITRITE 0
NITRATE 0

14/6
PH 7.6
AM .25
NITRITE .25
NITRATE 5

My questions are
* How long does it take to cycle the tank, I'm betting the answers are along the lines of how long is a piece of string???
* What kind of things should we be doing, to help the process along?

Yep... depends on ...

Whether or not you "seeded" the tank with water/media from another system, or filter "gunk"
    Temperature
Level of ammonia, and how you introduce it

Some seasol will keep the plants going until you get some fish, and/or are cycled...

What fish are you going to get, and how many???

I have 2 other indoor aquariums - can I use the water from one of those to seed the tank?

As to fish - depends on what I can get.

Numbers - probably 10 ish to start with

Absolutely.... and squeeze the filter "gunk" over the grow beds when you next clean them out... full of all the "good stuff"....

Well I only cleaned the small tank the other day. Had to give it a good clean.

But the big tank is pretty feral, so will have to do as you say.

No worries.

Our main reason for buying the Basix Plastix version was it was small, simple and seemed a good place to start. The other main reason is I have 2 boys - one who is 6 and the other is 3. And every single thing that has gone in our backyard always gets "played" with. So was trying to minimise impact from them. And the other reason was that they couldn't get into it and swim.

System is going good, getting hammered at the moment with wind and rain due to the big weather front heading across NSW. If it survives the night then all should be good. Got a free top up of the FT though with the rain. (Always look on the bright side).

No fish yet, but it hasn't cycled yet.

How did the system hold up over night Rosey ? still standing and going strong ?

btw in the picture above that you posted the top of the growbed appears to be pulled in on each side and there is some bowing around the hole cut out area, is this just the way the picture is taken or is it bowed from being tied down during transport or is it feeling the weight of the media and water in the grow bed ?

Everything looks normal Rosey... patience... cycling takes time, especially when the temperature is down...
