I have just started a Aquaponics system in Higgins ACT and have used a “ICB” (cut in half ) as the fish tank and at the moment I am using three half barrels as the grow beds with a view to add the three other grow beds at a later stage. I am also going to set up two half barrels under the three grow beds for worms and black soldier fly larvae. I an in the process of cycling the water at the moment and will be using Yabbies |

Yay, another canberra system. Good time of year to get it going too - my water temps are up around the 10s. |

This week the temperature was -4 two days in a row and the yabbie tanks had ice on the surface. I have to insulate the tanks and add a heater or two to the system. (when I am allowed to spend some more money). I should be adding some pics of the system tonight. |

Here are a couple of pictures. The area is still a bit messy as I am still playing with the system. The lattice is to stop the birds getting at the yabbies. The inlet to the grow beds has to be attached and I have placed mesh filters under the taps to catch any large particles that make it through the pump.

At the moment I have about 80 seperated into a male and female tank (exact numbers unsure). They are about 5cm long. I have about 10 yabbies that I caught from my dam that are about 15cm long. I am trying to design a method to house the yabbies in seperate compartments but still have the ability to be feed them easily. I will be trying different things over the next few months. |
