If your living in New South Wales and would like to possibly speak with others in your area, please reply to this post, and give people an idea of where you are (no exact details, town or postcode perhaps) and whether or not you have an aquaponic system. :)

G'Day
I have just joined here after being given a copy of an article my Dad got out of Gardening Australia.
I was immediately interested in the idea of being able to undertake a secondary project in conjunction with my primary business concern of breeding Cichlids.
I currently run 45 tanks with a variety of species and as you can imagine this leads to high water usage something that we all need to recognise as a MUST Recycle item.
With this in mind, I am interested to hear from anyone who currently runs a aquaponic system in regards to tropical fish and also any advice, tips or tricks in the establishing of a suitable system to better enable me to use the effluent produced during the process of breeding and keeping fish.
I live on the south coast of NSW [Near Nowra] and we are currently beginning to reach low water levels in our catchment areas and I would therefore like to be able to get a system up and running ASAP.

Cheers
Frony05

p.s I am also interested in the alternative forms of livestock suitable for this type of project

Hi Frony05. A lot of folks in the US are raising Tilapia (Oreochromis). Welcome!

hi, I'm in Dubbo NSW and am also starting up. I've bought one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-3x6-CARPORT- ... dZViewItem
which I assembled yesterday as a green house. Seem good for the price. we'll see how it lasts. I've got one of the standard 1000 litre tanks for my fish tank, which I am currently purging. It held NaOH, so we'll see if that's an issue. It should be very easy to neutralise. I've got a few goldies in a 200 litre drum at the moment ( a bit alkaline ) and to get the system at least initiated. I've bought some river gral as my growing medium, and have a long cattle trough for my first grow bed, with more grow bed to come. It would be good to see a system working in NSW.

Hi mruges, the carport should be okay until you get some big wind. You'll either have to replace the framework or make sure it is securely tethered (they tend to twist and break)
You'll have to start up a system thread in the Members System section and show us heaps of pictures!
Welcome! :)

Hi Redleg, welcome to the land of AP.

Nice to see someone else from NSW here, for some reason doesn't seem to be a lot of us, sadly (well for me anyway) most seem to be north of Newcastle.

On a good note most aquaculture/hydro farms also seem to be up your way .

Hi,
We're scavenging some gear to start aquaponicing. Located in North Western NSW, about 250 westof Bourke. Main concerns are the hot winds burning plants.
Plan to start with a big tank to help deal with heat. and put plants in it so air moves across water to plants... any thoughts?
Mruges how are you going in Dubbo? I go through there often. Have you found a place to source fish?

I've bought my fish from livefish. They've been most helpful with small quantites. The freight stopped others, while most don't reply to e-mails. One can only assume that they're not interested. I've housed mine in a portable gazebo from e-bay. I've concreted supports for the legs for more strenghth, and I'm going to put in a star post at each corner to further stenghten it, but so far so good. I bought a 1000 litre drum from B&J chemicles in Dubbo for $200. Your welcome to drop in and have a look, but I'm only a newby.
