I've been building up a pretty sizeable system for around 6 months now. Still not really growing anything which is partly the reason for reaching out. Looking for fellow aquaponicists in my area with decent systems.

My aquaponics experiment is rather simple,

An old beat-up pump shoots water to the growbed and biofilter

Plants grow in the gravel growbed.

Biochemistry takes place in biofilter.
before I added any fish or plants, I added worm castings to mineralize and add bacteria to the water. next day I added fish and planted wheat, beans and a transplant bean plant. smooth sailing so far.
I've noticed there must a balance between fish, water, and plants. you do want a somewhat dense population of fish.

there are these neat little minnows in the canal. I caught about 40 of them with a coat-hanger shaped net. and comet goldfish are 30 cents each and make plenty of ammonia and solid waste.
If your looking for edible fish though, as long as your water and plants are properly shaded just about any typical edible fish will do. I'm planing on a tilapia + spinach and lettuce right now. You don't want full sun out here unless you're growing eggplants or cantaloupe or another heat resistant plant. Then it might get too hot for some fish.
