I was raising a type of Tilapia also known as Musht or Amnon. They are really tropical fish and thrive in the Sea of Galilea which is aka Lake Kineret (freshwater) We caught them as fry and they thrived in our systems till we got a record cold snap. I was not running any heat and would prefer not to. I may make a heater and have it ready for another cold snap. I would rather not change my fish according to the seasons. It is not easy to get fish stock in Israel.

Goldfish are an option but I want edibles. That disqualifies catfish, not kosher. Heard about a guy who breeds Hybrid striped bass but he said now is not the time of year he can get them for us. They are apparently in the growing ponds. Also heard about mullet that may work, not too sure. Carp are always an option but who wants to raise gefilte fish?

Anyone have any suggestions?

You should be able to use the Australian Silver Perch as I know they are being farmed in Israel. In fact I am pretty sure you are producing more tonnes per year than here in Aust.

Where in Israel are you? What's your climate like? How cold does it get down to?

I'm in Bet Shemesh. Above is the average temperatures. This party winter we had a cold snap that lasted many days and got very cold, around 2_4 degrees Celsius for many days.
