I was wondering how many active SoCal members we have. I know of a few in California, and a few with in a few 100 miles of LA. I am located in the center of Orange County, in the city of Orange. There is a Church that as a very nice set up that I have visited. Their web site is http://appliedaquaponics.com/. I am not affiliated and go to a different church, so don't have a lot more information then whats on their website, besides seeing it first hand. |

I'm in Chula Vista, work, and rain has slightly stalled me, but I plan on getting my system up by May. |

I'm in RSM. I saw a article recently in the OC reg. but i'm not sure if it's the same people you mentioned. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/fish-334945-futrell-hill.html I also go to a different church - Rockharbor - and would love to take this down to areas like Smokey (methane) mtn. in manila or Calcutta. Thailand would be an easy place to take this also since they are already excellent fish keepers. I used to breed Discus and I remember reading Thai's do this also to supply our Fish hobby shops. |

I saw that article, that's when my wife FINALY got on board with he whole AP idea in our back yard. I been trying to convince her for almost 8 months, she saw that and was like "why don't you do that?" Those guys seem pretty new at it still (had a mass fish die off when temps dropped below 60 for a few weeks), and if i had some contact info for them i would send them a link to this website. |

Hey Todd61 do you sell Tilapia? I know the other 2 allowed work great for crossing as the male ratio is great. Just wondering if you offer pairs of breeders for sell? I live somewhat near Visalia so far you're the only one I'm aware of that's that close too me. |

I'm designing my system right now, I plan on having it up and close to running by the end of this month if not by then definitely by mid March. I just saw a few peeps on ebay asking $600 (with shipping) for a breeding pair, and I question if it's worth it for residential aquaponics (I wouldn't mind going commercial someday, but I wanna make sure I would enjoy doing this large scale). But I'm gonna check the website out there you listed. BTW Todd what type of fish are you using? |

I have Koi right now. We are hoping to move this spring/summer and then set up another system with Tilapia. No way would I pay that much for a breeding pair. You could get 25 fish from Kellen and the pull a male and a few females out and have your own set up plus a few to eat! Kellen seems like a great guy and has a ton of knowledge about Tilapia. |

Yeah, the Fish and Game department is screwing around with the Fish regs here in Cali, I know there was 2 legal types of Tilapia, but I wanted to do the hybrid tilapia with that 98% male. |

There are 2 guys on Craigslist, that post almost every day. the one i have dealt with is in Chino, they are $100 each, and were filled with the liquid used to sterilized SS pipes used on dairy farms. That way you know half of the genetics will work well for YOUR system, and you wont have the risk/cost of dumping in to a breeding pair (IMHO, not worth it for back yards) |

The sellers in San Diego are selling the hybrid tilapia. 98% male. It is supposed to prevent too many fingerlings at once. If you put a net across the bottom of your tank, the female won't be male to mouth brood the eggs, that too could prevent overpopulation. I like the idea of having equal populations of both sexes, and just segregate a breeding pair if you have the space for a nursery tank. The reason I am going to leave one of my growbeds as a raft setup is so that I could use it as a nursery tank if I wanted. That, and it is a little less gravel to deal with... |
